Reading Challenge

It’s undeniable that a child’s reading skills are important to their success in school, work, and life in general. It is very possible to help ensure your child’s success by reading to them starting at a very early age. Below are some benefits of promoting reading with your children; the earlier you start, the better.  Whether you’re reading a classic novel or fairy tales before bed, reading aloud to children (or having your children read to you or independently) can significantly benefit your child’s life. Some benefits of reading include:

  • Supports cognitive development
  • Improves language skills
  • Prepares for academic success
  • Develops a special bond with your child
  • Increases concentration and discipline
  • Improves imagination and creativity
  • Cultivates a lifelong love of reading

In order to support and build a culture of reading at Saint Mary School, we are having a school-wide reading challenge that includes a Create a Bookmark contest for the school per grade levels. Winners will have their bookmarks laminated and distributed at school. The grade levels are TK-K, Grades 1-2, 3-5, 6-8. This is also how the reading challenge is divided. Each grade level will focus on either the most books read, the most pages read, etc. Each teacher will set the parameters for the class/grade level. Great prizes will be awarded such as gift cards, homework passes, ice cream parties (for classes with 100% participation), Funko Pops,  gift cards for free books from the Scholastic Book Fair, Disney zip hoodie jackets, treasure box goodies (for Lower Grades), Barnes and Noble books with toy characters, and more. The Book Fair will culminate with the end of Catholic Schools Week and the Book Fair toward the end of January 2024. We hope this activity promotes literacy across all grade levels and provides incentives for students to read as much as possible.

For more information, please ask your child's teacher. Thank you for supporting your child in their academic journey!
